1. Daiquiri's origins

Beach Daiquiri Cuba

The Daiquiri is a timeless Cuban cocktail that was created on the shores of Daiquiri beach, near Santiago de Cuba, in the late 1800s.

At the time, an American engineer named Jennings Cox was working in the iron mines near the beach. One day, when his friends visited him, he decided to mix them a drink. Finding no gin, he used Cuban white rum and added lemon juice and sugar to soften the taste.

Giacomo Pagliuchi, one of Cox’s colleagues, gave the cocktail its name.

The duo took this unique blend to the Americano bar, where it quickly gained popularity and spread throughout the United States. Admiral Lucius W. Johnson played a key role in the cocktail’s fame, as he brought the recipe back to Washington.

2. Hemingway's favorite cocktail

During his frequent visits to Cuba in the 1930s, Hemingway developed a deep affection for the Daiquiri cocktail and even became its advocate in the US.

Hemingway was so passionate about the drink that he spent a considerable amount of time at La Floridita bar in Havana, where he even had a reserved table.

Ernest Hemingway Daquiri

To make his Daiquiri even more special, Hemingway created the “Papa Doble,” his own version of the classic cocktail. The “Papa Doble” included rum, lime juice, grapefruit, maraschino and sugar. Hemingway loved the drink so much that he would have several Daiquiris a day and even had an ice maker installed in his home to ensure that the drinks were always perfectly chilled.

Even after Hemingway’s death in 1961, his love for the Daiquiri lives on, and bars and restaurants around the world continue to offer their unique versions of his famous recipe.
