Barcelona is a unique city that has evolved alongside its cultural heritage. The Carrer de les Heures, near Plaza Real, is a prime example of how the passage of time transforms city spaces and their populations. In today’s article, you’ll explore the history of the My Way restaurant and discover little-known facts about this iconic location that few residents or tourists are aware of.
First, it’s important to note that all the information shared here has been sourced from official city organizations, such as the Barcelona City Council.
Without further ado, let’s get started!
The Origin of Carrer de les Heures
According to city archives and websites like Caminadeseixample, the Carrer de les Heures originated in the old Horta district, a rural area dotted with residences surrounded by lush vegetation.
Did You Know…?
The Catalan word “heura” (ivy) refers to the type of plants that once grew abundantly in the area. These plants were often found near the brothels that lined the outskirts of the city.
Later, in the 17th century, new residential houses were built, leading to the construction of streets that connected to the city center. During the same period, work began on remodeling the Santa Madrona Convent, which would eventually lay the foundations for what is now Plaza Real.
One of these new streets was named “Carrer de les Heures” in honor of the ivy that adorned the residences. This street also connected to Carrer del Llorer, an area once known for its brothels and taverns.
And Later...
As the years passed and following the bombings during the Semana Trágica (Tragic Week) in Barcelona, the area became a maze of alleys once again. During reconstruction, various businesses and shops set up around Plaza Real, further shaping its character.
The History of My Way
Believe it or not, traces of the city’s past can still be found today. Near the entrance to our lounge restaurant was the original headquarters of La Vanguardia in Barcelona. As a tribute to this history, we proudly display a copy of the first printed edition from February 1, 1881.
Additionally, a commemorative plaque once marked the days when this space served as a workshop and editorial hub for La Vanguardia. Like our restaurant, many other establishments in the area hold fascinating histories, such as the Herboristeria del Rei, known as the oldest shop in Barcelona.
