Origins of Catalan Wine
The winemaking tradition in Catalonia dates back to classical times, specifically during the expansion of the Roman Empire. After subjugating the Iberian tribes of the peninsula, the Romans began a colonization process that included establishing vineyards in areas like Empordà, Tarragona, Baix Camp, and El Priorat.
The Romans took advantage of the cool climate and high-quality grapes to start their harvests, which were highly appreciated in Roman cities. It was common for patricians, the elite of the time, to have a particular fondness for these wines. Throughout the Middle Ages, Catalonia’s wine regions began exporting their wines to other countries, as the grape varieties used were ideal for producing white and red wines.
In the late Industrial Age, a phylloxera plague devastated vineyards across Europe, forcing farmers to take action. Thanks to their efforts, they overcame this challenge, increasing production until World War I. In winemaking towns like Sant Sadurní D’Anoia, a popular festival is held to commemorate this milestone.
Types of Wines from Penedès
Like other denominations of origin, Penedès wines are classified based on the type of grape used in their production. There are two main types:
- White: The grapes used for this type of wine come from varieties such as xarel·lo, macabeu, and parellada. Penedès white wines are prized for their quality and aromatic richness, achieving a perfect balance between acidity and alcohol.
- Red: Although some grape varieties like Garnacha, Monastrell, and Syrah were affected by the phylloxera plague and the difficulties of war, constant innovation allowed these grapes to recover and be refined to meet the needs and characteristic flavors of Penedès wines.
