In today's post we will present you the funniest curiosities about the life and legacy of the American singer Frank Sinatra.

Frank Sinatra: A Musical Legacy Like No Other

“You only live once, and the way I live, once is enough.” This is one of the most famous and memorable quotes by Frank Sinatra, one of the greatest American singers and actors in history, who left us a musical legacy spanning over 59 years. Sinatra’s work reflects a unique way of feeling, experiencing, and creating, deeply tied to the contemporary era. From his early years, he gained immense popularity, particularly for his musical talent, which earned him numerous awards, accolades, and nominations. In this article, just as in our restaurant, we pay tribute to him by sharing some fascinating facts about his life and career.

The Road to Stardom

From the start, Frank Sinatra admired the world of music, particularly Bing Crosby, an American singer whom Sinatra idolized from the moment he first heard him perform at a concert in 1935. In fact, in his biography, Sinatra admitted that he wanted to sing just like Crosby.

In 1939, Sinatra began recording with Harry James’s orchestra, and a year later, he joined Tommy Dorsey’s band, one of the most popular swing ensembles in the United States. This exposure allowed him to captivate audiences with his unique personality. The following year, Sinatra embarked on a solo career and, given his popularity, began appearing in films such as Higher and Higher and The Man with the Golden Arm.

During this decade, Sinatra composed over 60 songs, many of them orchestrated but distinct from traditional swing styles. This shift was driven by the rise of pop music and Rock & Roll, pushing him to innovate his repertoire. During this time, he collaborated with legendary celebrities like Elvis Presley, Grace Kelly, Rita Hayworth, and Duke Ellington.

Works like My Way elevated Sinatra to become the face of American popular music. His stardom peaked when he collaborated with his idol Bing Crosby in 1968.

A Life of Unrequited Loves and Torrid Romances

Frank Sinatra’s life was marked by numerous women who influenced his career and lifestyle. The artist married four times, though in his biography, he acknowledged only his first wife, Nancy Barbato, as his true partner.

His romances included cinema icons such as Ava Gardner, Mia Farrow, Barbara Marx, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marilyn Monroe. Sinatra’s charm also caught the attention of Jackie Kennedy, the ex-wife of politician John F. Kennedy.

His continuous romances and divorces were reflected in his music and style, influencing changes in his rhythms and musical genres.

Welcoming Elvis

In 1960, Rock singer Elvis Presley completed his military service. To Elvis's surprise, Sinatra organized a television special titled Frank Sinatra Timex Show: Welcome Home Elvis, where both artists performed together.

Although Sinatra held controversial opinions about Rock & Roll and felt threatened by the rise of new youthful stars, he ultimately decided to collaborate with his “rival” at his daughter’s suggestion. This joint performance solidified a friendship between the two singers despite their musical differences.

Unfounded Mafia Rumors

One of the most controversial aspects of Sinatra’s life was his alleged connections to the mafia. This part of his life came with a complicated reputation, as he was investigated several times by the FBI, although no involvement in criminal activities was ever proven.

It is known that he had friendships with figures like Sam Giancana and Lucky Luciano. These associations inspired a scene in The Godfather, where singer Fontaine is invited by mob boss Vito Corleone to perform at his daughter’s wedding.

My Way

One of Sinatra’s most iconic songs is My Way, which reflects his unique way of life. This adaptation of “Comme d’habitude” by Claude François and Jacques Revaux also lends its name to our lounge restaurant, a tribute to the 1950s.

At My Way, you can watch clips of classic films from the era while enjoying delicious tapas and the most refreshing cocktails in Plaza Real.
