Where does New Year's Eve come from?
New Year's Eve, also known as End of the Year, is a celebration held worldwide on the last day of the year. But where does this tradition come from?
Its origins go back to Roman times, when the end of the lunar year (mid-March) was celebrated. With the adoption of the Julian calendar, the beginning of the year was moved to January 1st. It wasn't until the Middle Ages that the arrival of the new year began to be celebrated, also on the night of December 31st.
In Spain and the lucky grapes
According to this custom, twelve grapes must be eaten, one for each chime of the clock marking the arrival of the new year, to attract good luck.
