Origin of World Tapas Day

World Tapas Day was established by the Asociación Saborea España to honour one of Spain’s most cherished gastronomic traditions. Tapas, small portions of food served with drinks, have a rich and varied history. It is said that their origin dates back to the old custom of covering wine glasses with a slice of bread or ham to prevent dust or insects from falling into the drink. Over the years, this simple practice evolved into a complete culinary experience, where creativity and quality ingredients are key.

Curiosities about Tapas

  • Regional diversity: each region of Spain has its own specialities in tapas. From the pintxos of the Basque Country to the papas arrugadas of the Canary Islands, tapas reflect the richness and diversity of Spanish cuisine.
  • Evolution of tapas: originally, tapas were simple, like olives or almonds. Over time, they have evolved to include more sophisticated ingredients and advanced culinary techniques, becoming true masterpieces of gastronomy.
