The origin of Saint John's night

The celebration of Saint John’s night has a pagan origin, linked to the summer solstice. It is an ancient tradition that worships the sun and the lengthening of the days. In Barcelona, this festivity is characterised by the presence of bonfires, which have been a fundamental part of the festivities since the 18th century, despite restrictions and prohibitions over time. The flames of the bonfires have a special significance, as they are believed to ward off evil spirits and purify the environment.

The ritual of the flame of Canigó

The official start of Saint John’s celebration in Barcelona is marked by the ritual of the Flame of Canigó. This tradition, which began in 1963, involves the transportation of an eternal flame from Castellet de Perpinyà to the peak of Canigó. During the night of 22nd to 23rd June, the flame is renewed and distributed by volunteers to various towns in Catalonia. This year, the Flame of Canigó will arrive in Barcelona on 23rd June at 5:00 pm and will be welcomed with a grand celebration in Sant Jaume Square.

Pyrotechnics and fireworks

One of the most exciting aspects of Saint John’s night in Barcelona is the pyrotechnics. For almost a month before the celebration, stalls selling fireworks, rockets, and firecrackers are set up throughout the city. On the night of 23rd June, families and friends gather to light firecrackers and enjoy light and sound shows that illuminate the sky of Barcelona. It’s a vibrant and exciting experience not to be missed.

Bonfires of Saint John in Barcelona

Bonfires are an essential part of the Saint John celebration. Lighting bonfires and burning the old symbolises purification and the opening to new opportunities. During the “Night of Fire”, numerous neighbourhoods and beaches in Barcelona organise controlled bonfires where people can burn old objects and bad spirits. In recent years, safety measures have been implemented, allowing only officially organised bonfires to prevent fires. Stay informed about permitted locations to enjoy this tradition safely.
