1. Origins

Coco loco

Did you know that this tropical cocktail was actually created by a man from Barcelona? Yes, you read that right. Ricardo Gracia was a hotelier who worked at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where a coconut-based cocktail called the “Coco Loco” was served around 1954.

However, as there is no great recipe without a casual discovery, coconut pickers went on strike. Therefore, Ricardo couldn’t serve his Coco Locos with the same proportions of fruit and, much less, served in its shell.

So, they came up with the idea of changing the cocktail recipe by introducing another of Puerto Rico’s emblematic fruits, the pineapple. They served a combination of white rum, pineapple, and coconut, presented inside a hollowed-out pineapple.

It became so famous that in 1978, the Piña Colada was declared the official drink of the country.

You might be thinking that making a Piña Colada doesn’t require much explanation. That by simply mixing one part white rum, three parts pineapple juice, and one part coconut milk, you’ll have the perfect cocktail.

If only everything in life was as easy as making a reservation at My Way. Unfortunately, creating a good Piña Colada requires a bit more effort.

According to Cristian Ramírez, a professor at the Puerto Rico School of Hospitality, the key is to find a balance between two points. The first is between the flavor of the pineapple and coconut, where neither fruit should overpower the other. The second is with the texture, which should be very smooth without becoming watery.

By achieving this balance, you can enjoy a refreshing drink that transports you straight to Puerto Rico.
